BYD Shark Earns Five Euro NCAP Stars. Its Child Safety Score Stands Out

BYD Shark – Euro NCAP Crash Test

A pickup truck isn’t usually the first vehicle that comes to mind when discussing child safety. Most buyers look at towing ability, payload and whether the thing can survive a working week without complaining.

BYD’s Shark has just given them another reason to pay attention.

The plug-in hybrid pickup received five stars from Euro NCAP in the latest European safety assessment. Its strongest result wasn’t adult occupant protection, as some might expect, but the systems designed to help prevent crashes.

The Shark scored 87 percent for Safety Assist.

Euro NCAP praised its automatic emergency braking performance when responding to other vehicles. The lane-support system and speed assistance technology also contributed to that result.

Child occupant protection reached 86 percent, compared with 82 percent for adults.

The report highlighted protection for the six-year-old and ten-year-old child dummies during the side barrier test. It also recognised the vehicle’s child presence detection system, which can warn when a child may have been left inside.

That’s a particularly relevant feature in a double-cab pickup.

These vehicles increasingly serve two purposes. They still carry equipment and handle demanding jobs, but plenty of owners also use them for school runs, shopping and family holidays.

The Shark’s remaining score was 74 percent for vulnerable road users. Its emergency braking system performed well in tests involving cyclists and showed a good response to motorcyclists.

There’s some background worth mentioning.

The European assessment draws on testing conducted by Australia’s ANCAP organisation last year, with additional evaluations carried out by Euro NCAP. It isn’t an entirely new crash-test programme performed from scratch in Europe.

The result nevertheless gives European buyers an independent safety benchmark before the model reaches more showrooms.

Underneath, the Shark is quite different from a conventional diesel pickup. Its DMO plug-in hybrid system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors.

Total output reaches 436 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. BYD quotes 5.7 seconds for the sprint to 100 km/h, an unusually quick figure for a vehicle of this type.

A 32.2 kWh Blade Battery provides up to 90 kilometres of electric driving, according to the manufacturer’s figures.

BYD expects sales to begin in selected European markets within three months of the October announcement, followed by a broader rollout during the first half of 2027.

Pricing remains an important missing piece.

The Shark’s safety rating is now established, and its hybrid performance looks competitive on paper. Whether European pickup buyers embrace it will depend just as much on its working capabilities, local prices and dealer support.
